Four Common Sports Injuries

Even the best of athletes can suffer from injuries in their sport.  Many sports medicine physicians, trainers, and doctors are trained to assist athletes in their diagnosis, recovery, and rehabilitation once they suffer a sports injury.  They help get the athlete back on the field or court as soon as safely possible.  As an orthopedic surgeon in Deland, we have many experts in sports medicine on site to provide specialty and quality care to our athletes.  There are many common injuries that bring athletes in our doors to be checked out by our sports medicine doctors.

ACL Tears

Knee injuries, like ACL tears or strains, are extremely common in our athletic patients.  Many athletes suffer from this injury when they slow down and make a quick movement to change their direction, like pivoting.  Because the ACL is one of the major ligaments of the knee used for stabilization, this injury can be devastating.  This may cause swelling, discomfort during movement, and a need for surgical repair.

Concussions

Concussions are extremely common injuries that many athletes face, no matter their sport.  Concussions are injuries to the brain that can cause a range of symptoms, such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, slurred speech, light sensitivity, and vomiting.  This will require immediate treatment to determine the severity and discuss remedies and a course of treatment.  Often times, athletes suffering from concussions will be told to rest, reduce physical activities, avoid mental strain, and wait for a doctor to clear them before returning to their sport.

Shin Splits

Lower leg pain is one of the major symptoms of shin splits.  This injury is most commonly noted in runners or in athletes where running is a major part of their sport, such as soccer.  Shin splits can be prevented by training properly and taking it easy when you feel pain.  Also, having shoes with good arch support will also provide running athletes with the support they need to prevent injury.

Shoulder Injuries

Many athletes suffer from shoulder injuries, as they can occur in almost any sport.  These are typically misalignments, dislocations, and muscle or ligament strains or pulls.  This can cause extreme pain that may require physical therapy or even surgery to treat.  Many people are unaware that shoulder is actually a weak joint in our body, which makes it extremely susceptible to injury, especially in athletes with rigorous physical activity.

These are some of the most common sports injuries that can occur in athletes and bring them into our sports medicine facility for diagnosis and treatment.  At Florida Bone and Joint, a premiere orthopedic surgeon in Deland, we have the expertise and resources to provide quality medical care to all of our patients, including athletes suffering from sports injuries.  Contact us to hear about our range of medical services today.
